Hohhot City Tour: Experience Mongolian Charm and Discover Delicious Food in the Grassland Capital 🐎
As the capital of Inner Mongolia, Hohhot seamlessly blends grassland culture with modern urban living. The city offers a wide range of activities and down-to-earth experiences, making one or two days sufficient to fully experience its unique charm. Below are three tips for must-see attractions, local cuisine, and travel tips.
Must-See Attractions: A Comprehensive Look at Mongol and Yuan Dynasty Culture
• Dazhao Temple: Inner Mongolia's most famous Tibetan Buddhist temple, its majestic yellow glazed tile roof boasts a silver Buddha statue, dragon carvings, and murals, known as its "Three Wonders." A guided tour is recommended for historical explanations. Just outside, the Saishang Old Street is filled with ancient charm and offers souvenirs like silver jewelry and dairy products. 📿
• Inner Mongolia Museum: Free admission (reservations required). Must-see exhibitions include "The Former Site of the Liao Dynasty" and "Heroic Sisters of the Grassland." The museum's flagship treasure, the "Golden Crown of the Xiongnu King," is exquisitely crafted. There are also interactive exhibits perfect for children.
• Gegentala Grassland (Suburban): A one-hour drive from the city, you can experience horseback riding, archery, enjoy evening bonfire parties, stay in a yurt and gaze at the stars, and experience the beauty of the grasslands at night.
• Qingcheng Park: A popular leisure destination for locals, where you can enjoy boating on the lake and admiring the flowers in the park. In autumn, maple leaves line the paths, and you can see people walking their birds or practicing Tai Chi everywhere, brimming with the spirit of life.
Special Cuisine: A taste of the grasslands on your tongue.
• Hand-Pulled Meat: We recommend the "Bayander" restaurant. Choose lamb cooked in plain water and dipped in salt or chives for an authentic and tender flavor.
• Shaomai: "Lao Suiyuan Shaomai" is a time-honored restaurant. Their shaomai, filled with pure lamb, have paper-thin wrappers. Paired with brick tea to soothe the greasiness, they're a must-try for breakfast.
• Sheep Offal: Head to "Sheep Offal Street" early in the morning for a warming and delicious mutton offal soup with chili oil and twisted dough sticks, a local favorite breakfast.
• Dairy Products: Don't miss the milk skin, milk tofu, and kumis sold in supermarkets or on the old street. They have a rich flavor and make great gifts.
Travel Tips
• Transportation: Taxis in the city start at 8 yuan, and buses cover major attractions. From the airport, take Metro Line 1 directly to the heart of the city.
• Accommodation: We recommend staying in the Zhongshan Road business district, such as the Hohhot Hotel, which is close to the Dazhao Temple and convenient for shopping and dining.
• Note: Respect local customs and do not wear shorts or skirts when entering temples. The temperature fluctuates greatly between day and night, so bring a light jacket even in summer.
Hohhot's urban area is not overly commercialized, but instead exudes the rusticity and warmth of the grassland people, a place worth savoring!
