Want to escape the city with your kids on the weekend but not travel too far? A 3-hour drive straight to Sanggan River Resort offers autumn scenery, pottery, and an ancient town all in one. Tested and proven, the kids had so much fun they didn’t want to leave. Highly recommended!
🌟 Overall Experience
Fewer people, beautiful and peaceful scenery, no city crowds, and the whole way is filled with healing autumn views. From natural landscapes to hands-on experiences and historical culture, the itinerary is relaxed, allowing both kids and parents to enjoy easily with great value for money.
📍 Itinerary & Highlights
Day 1: Slow Autumn Time in the Millennium Pottery Village
- Autumn Scenery Along the Way: After exiting the highway, you can see the Sanggan River, with golden trees on both banks and gently flowing water. The autumn breeze brings a refreshing feeling through the car window. The kids excitedly point outside and even found leaves bigger than their heads by the roadside. Every photo looks great.
- Dongyaogou Village Citywalk: This village is a distinctive pottery village with blue-tiled earth walls giving a rustic feel. Golden corn cobs are drying by the roadside, and broken pottery pieces can be seen in the wall cracks, full of local flavor. There’s a market in front of the village committee in the morning, where you can experience local life and take great photos.
- Parent-Child Pottery Experience: Let the kids try wheel throwing; the clay spins in their hands, slowly turning from a “small lump” into a pen holder, giving them a great sense of accomplishment. The shop can fire the pottery, which will be mailed back in about 15 days, so you can look forward to receiving it later—very meaningful. Don’t miss the ancient pottery kiln in the village; its reddish-brown body holds a thousand-year-old craftsmanship story, perfect for teaching kids some fun facts.
Day 2: Leisurely Hiking, Coffee, and Ancient Town
- Henan Temple Hike: About 2 kilometers from the resort, drive to the parking lot and climb a small hill to the top. It’s easy enough for kids to manage. From the summit, you can see the ancient Great Wall and colorful mountain forests (when we went, the trees hadn’t fully changed color yet, but autumn was deepening). After descending, visit the village coffee shop, order a cup of coffee to rest, and kids can try making cotton candy. The sweet “cloud” is a big hit with children.
- Food & History to End: After checking out, head to Zhuolu County to eat stewed dishes. The hot stew paired with steamed flatbread is heartwarming, generous in portion, and affordable. The last stop is Jimingyi, where you can touch the bricks of the ancient city wall and listen to stories about the rise and fall of the ancient post office. It’s more vivid than textbook history, and the kids were fascinated.
💡 Practical Tips
1. Pottery firing takes about 15 days, so remember to provide your shipping address in advance to avoid missing it.
2. It’s windy around Sanggan River, so even on sunny days, bring an extra jacket for the kids to prevent catching a cold.
3. You can hire a guide at Jimingyi to learn many secrets of the ancient city.
If you want a weekend to relax with your kids while balancing fun and learning, Sanggan River Resort is really a great choice. Tested and no disappointments!
