[Matsuen Annex] A Japanese-style military rest area in the Hidden Garden 🌲🏯

In the afternoon in Hualien, I walked into the Pine Garden Villa hidden in the mountains. It is an old resting place for officers during the Japanese colonial period. However, it has become the most healing secret place because it is surrounded by old pines and has a quiet courtyard. Walking along the bluestone path into the garden, you will see the well-preserved wooden platform and corridor. The sunlight shines through the pine needles, casting mottled shadows. Every step is like walking into an old photograph.

This was once a summer resort for high-ranking Japanese generals to overlook the Pacific Ocean. The exhibition room in the museum allowed me to carefully read the precious photos and cultural relics of that time. What surprised me most was the viewing platform on the second floor. Looking at the junction of mountains and sea, Hualien Harbor and the Pacific Ocean are in full view. The sea breeze is mixed with pine scent, which makes people feel relaxed.

In addition to the historical atmosphere, I was also intoxicated by the mountain trail garden outside the museum, where small flowers, mosses and ancient trees coexist, creating a healing scene for taking photos and checking in. Whether it is for a date, to relax, or to sit and read, Songyuan Villa is like a breathing time machine, taking you back to the days away from the hustle and bustle.
