Hualien Old Prison Cultural Tour Recommendations

#SeptemberDestinations2025
When visiting Hualien, consider visiting the ruins of the old Hualien Prison. This was the Hualien Port Branch of the Taipei Prison, established during the Japanese colonial period. After the war, it became the Hualien Prison. It wasn't until 1982, when it was relocated to Ji'an Township, that the old prison in the city center fell into disuse and was transformed into the present-day Freedom Square and City Wall Garden. The remaining ruins, including the original walls and two watchtowers, were registered as a Hualien County Historic Site in 2012. They preserve the prison's history and testament to human rights development, and have been transformed into an outdoor recreational space for art performances. I personally think it's quite nice.
