A Journey Through Time and Light: Hongcun, Chengkan & Xixinan

I recently explored three stunning villages in Anhui province—Hongcun, Chengkan, and Xixinan—and it was one of the most memorable cultural trips I’ve ever taken.

🏞️ Hongcun
This UNESCO World Heritage site is like stepping into a classical Chinese painting. The crescent-shaped Moon Pond, ancient Hui-style architecture, and peaceful alleys made me feel like time had slowed down. Early morning mist over the water was simply magical.

🏯 Chengkan
Less touristy than Hongcun, Chengkan offers a deeper dive into traditional geomantic design and ancestral halls. The layout of the village follows yin-yang principles, and every corner tells a story. It’s a paradise for architecture lovers and history buffs.

🎭 Xixinan Fish Lantern Festival
The highlight of my trip! This centuries-old folk celebration was vibrant and full of life. Locals paraded handmade fish lanterns through the village streets, accompanied by music, laughter, and firecrackers. The atmosphere was festive and heartwarming—truly a unique cultural experience.

🌟 Tips

• Visit during weekdays to avoid crowds.
• Hire a local guide in Chengkan to understand the symbolism behind the architecture.
• Don’t miss the night parade in Xixinan if you’re there during the festival!
