Autumn in Inner Mongolia is colder than I imagined. It's already minus 12 degrees Celsius in October. I really need to prepare clothes to keep warm! This trip walked through Hailar, Manzhouli, and Ergun, and felt the unique magnificence and tranquility of the steppe border.
🗓️Itinerary:
The first stop is Hulunbuir-Hailar National Forest Park (Address: West Junction Street, Hailar District, Hulunbuir City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, open at 08:00-17:30, ticket 28 yuan). The air in the park is super fresh, the large birch forest with the blue sky is really nice to take pictures. You can also stroll through the woods and hear the wind blowing through the treetops for a sense of relaxation away from the city. The autumn leaves have stained a golden yellow, and with the clean blue sky, it’s a great spot for maple viewing. However, the temperature contrast between morning and night is huge, so it is recommended to bring a few more warm jackets, especially when you leave in the morning and return in the evening.
Then we went to Manzhouli and checked in at Lubri Western Restaurant (Head Office) (Address: 178 West Sandao Street, Sino-Soviet Pedestrian Street). The outside of the restaurant has a fusion of Chinese architecture and Russian style, which is very exotic. I recommend the crock pot Russian beef and Ukrainian beet soup. They are warm and suitable for the cold weather. The Queen’s Salad and Lubri cottage cheese bun were very characteristic, and for dessert the curd bun was smooth and worth a try. However, the restaurant is sometimes very busy, if you do not want to wait, it is recommended to book in advance, the atmosphere at night is particularly great.
The third stop was Ergun, specifically to Mordaoga National Forest Park (Address: 11 km from Mordaoga Town, Hulunbuir City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, operating at 08:30-17:00). The park is very large, the forest maintains its original appearance, and the larch and birch trees make people feel like they have really stepped into a fairy tale world. A day is recommended, hiking shoes and warm gear are essential due to the undulating terrain. The park area is large enough that you are not afraid of crowds and you can definitely enjoy and breathe with nature.
There is also through the desert Gobi, looking at a desolate, but a special sense of tranquility. There is really no urban pollution when watching the stars at night. The Chinese-style buildings in the distance are illuminated, giving it a blend of ancient and modern times.
💡 Practical itinerary TIPS:
1. The temperature in Inner Mongolia varies greatly between morning and evening. In October, you need to bring down jackets, gloves and hats.
2. The restaurant is easily packed at night, it is recommended to call in advance to reserve a place.
3. Forest Park with a thermos out of the door, there are no shops inside, you have to prepare your own drinks and simple snacks.
4. It is recommended to use a taxi or chartered car for the trip, which is more convenient and safe.
5. Desert Gobi wind is relatively strong, do not underestimate the weather forecast, mask + lip balm can prevent dryness.
Each attraction has its own unique feel, feel the natural beauty far away from the hustle and bustle in Hulunbuir, Kushinaro, Manzhouli, Ergun, the walk is very chill, suitable for those who want to experience the autumn colors of the northern border.
