THE HANGING TEMPLE

Built more than 1,500 years ago, this temple is the only existing one combining 3 Chinese traditional philosophies or 3 religions (Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism).


According to legend, the temple construction was started at the end of the Northern Wei dynasty by only one man, a monk named Liaoran (了然), in 491 AD. Over the next 1,400 years, many repairs and extensions have led to its present-day scale.
