Located in Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture, Kirozan Observatory Park is one of the most breathtaking spots along the Shimanami Kaido.
The observatory, perched at over 300 meters above sea level on the southern tip of Oshima, was designed by renowned architect Kengo Kuma. The modern and stylish design of the observatory itself is worth a visit. From this vantage point, you can enjoy views of the world's first triple suspension bridge, the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge, the dynamic currents of Kurushima Strait, one of Japan's three fastest tidal currents, and on clear days, even Mount Ishizuchi, the highest peak in western Japan.
The blue skies and sea, ships passing through the strait, bridges connecting the islands, and the scenery during the day or at sunset are all so beautiful that you might lose track of time.
In spring, the entire Kirozan Observatory Park is adorned with cherry blossoms, creating a stunning view. It's highly recommended to visit during this season for cherry blossom viewing.
The road to Kirozan is a winding path, so be cautious of oncoming vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians to ensure a safe journey.
