I just conquered Mt. Seoraksan—South Korea’s most iconic mountain—and it was the ultimate solo adventure. With jagged peaks, ancient temples, and trails ranging from serene to heart-pumping, it’s a must for any solo hiker seeking challenge, beauty, and profound peace.
What Makes Seoraksan Special?
Part of Seoraksan National Park (a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve), this mountain boasts:
· Daecheongbong Peak (1,708m): The highest peak, offering sunrise views above the clouds.
· Ulsanbawi Rock: A dramatic granite formation with steep stairways and epic vistas.
· Sinheungsa Temple: A Zen Buddhist temple with a towering bronze Buddha statue.
· Autumn Foliage: Arguably Korea’s most stunning fall colors.
Why Seoraksan for Solo Hikers?
· Well-Marked Trails: Clear paths and maps make navigation stress-free.
· Solo-Friendly: Many hikers hit the trails alone; it’s safe and social if you want it to be.
· Accommodation Options: Mountain huts (yeogwan), temples stays, or nearby Sokcho hotels.
· Rewarding Challenge: Choose your difficulty—from gentle valley walks to rocky ascents.

My Solo Itinerary
Day 1: Temples and Tigers
· Morning: Took a bus from Seoul Express Bus Terminal to Sokcho (2.5–3 hours), then a local bus to Seoraksan National Park.
· Afternoon: Hiked the Biryeong Falls Trail (easy-moderate) to acclimatize. Explored Sinheungsa Temple and the Great Bronze Buddha.
· Evening: Checked into a yeogwan (guesthouse) in Sogongwon or a temple stay at Baekdamsa. Ate makguksu (buckwheat noodles)—a regional specialty.
Day 2: Summit or Scenic Climb
· Option 1 (Hardcore): Pre-dawn start for Daecheongbong Peak via Biseondae Trail (10–12 hours round trip). Watched sunrise from the summit.
· Option 2 (Classic): Hiked Ulsanbawi Rock (3–4 hours)—888 steps with mind-blowing coastal and mountain views.
· Option 3 (Leisurely): Explored Heundeulbawi Rock and Gwongeumseong Fortress (cable car available).
· Evening: Soaked sore muscles in a Sokcho jimjilbang (spa) and feasted on fresh seafood.

Solo Hiker Tips
1. Start Early: Avoid crowds and finish before dark.
2. Pack Smart: Water, layers (weather changes fast!), energy snacks, and a power bank.
3. Check Weather: Fog or rain can make trails slippery—adjust plans accordingly.
4. Cash & Permits: Entry fees apply; some huts require booking in advance.

Final Thoughts
Hiking Seoraksan alone was empowering—a reminder that solitude amid raw nature can be the best companion. Whether you summit or savor the valleys, this mountain will leave you breathless in every way.
