Jisho-ji Temple was founded by Ashikaga Yoshimasa, the eighth shogun of the Muromachi shogunate. It is also known as Ginkaku-ji Temple.
It is called Ginkaku-ji Temple even though it is not made of silver!?
There are two theories about this mystery.
The plan to cover it with silver leaf became difficult due to financial difficulties during the war.
It was named Higashiyama Ginkaku-ji Temple because it was modeled after Kitayama Kinkaku-ji Temple.
Either way, there is no silver to be seen, but there is a sense of connection to the virtues of the Japanese people. The culture of wabi-sabi.
Perhaps the imperfection makes it feel closer to us and makes us feel more attached to it.
The garden is wonderful, but if you have the chance, I recommend climbing up to the top for a panoramic view!
You can get a panoramic view of Kyoto city, including Ginkaku-ji Temple.
