Essentials and Safety Tips for Hiking Seoraksan
Seoraksan National Park is open year-round, but due to its height and rugged terrain, safety equipment and clothing are crucial regardless of the season or course difficulty. This is especially true for long-distance hikes like Daecheongbong Peak or rocky sections (such as the Gongryong Ridge and the Northwest Ridge).
• Essential Equipment: Hiking boots that protect your ankles and prevent slipping are essential. Poles are also essential to distribute the load on your knees and prevent slipping. Crampons and gaiters are essential in winter or when there is residual snow.
• Clothing and Maintaining Body Temperature: Even in midsummer, temperatures near the summit of Seoraksan are low and windy, so be sure to pack functional clothing that absorbs sweat, a windbreaker/windproof jacket (hard shell), a hat, and gloves to maintain body temperature. In winter, it's especially important to stay warm to prevent hypothermia. • Water and Emergency Food: Since the long-distance trail takes more than 10 hours, you should prepare at least 1.5\sim 2\text{L} of water and high-calorie snacks (energy bars, chocolate, nuts) that can be easily consumed while walking.
• Other: It's recommended to always carry a headlamp for early morning or late descents, a spare battery for emergency contact, and a hot pack. Also, trails may be closed during wildfire prevention periods or inclement weather, so be sure to check the national park website for opening times before your visit.
