A Sip of Herbal Tea in Ipoh, Malaysia: 80 Years of Time and Heart

At a street corner in Ipoh's Old Town lies the "Ho Yan Hor Museum," a quiet place that tells stories. This museum is not just about selling herbal tea; it’s a warm memory that has journeyed from 1941 to today.

Back then, Dr. Ho Kai Cheong developed the first bottle of Ho Yan Hor herbal tea using traditional Chinese herbs. Eighty years later, this refreshing taste remains a familiar flavor for countless families and has become a trusted friend to the people of Ipoh.

Upon entering the museum, a friendly guide introduces the background and visitor information, with language options available—thoughtful indeed. Soon after, you can freely explore the space. The narrow staircases allow only one person at a time, a gesture of respect for the old building and care for every visitor.

After the tour, you can sample both hot and iced herbal teas, with a variety of flavors to choose from. The taste is herbal, but the aftertaste brings back childhood memories. Local friends shared that whenever they caught a cold, their mothers would hand them a cup of this tea—it was medicine, but also love. On that day, we even stumbled upon a buy-one-get-one-free promotion and couldn’t resist taking a few cans home.

The Ho Yan Hor Museum offers free admission, but remember to book online in advance. If you’re lucky, you might find an open slot and be able to enter on the spot. However, it’s best not to leave it to chance—this visit deserves your careful planning.
