Dining at Hakka Restaurant Ipoh Town(客家菜馆) with local friends was a nostalgic and flavourful experience that beautifully celebrated traditional Hakka cuisine.
Housed in a heritage shophouse in one of Ipoh's most popular areas for dining and local specialty stores, the restaurant is a hidden gem that serves up a comforting spread of heritage dishes rarely found elsewhere, all in a setting that blends Nanyang retro charm with touches reminiscent of a classic Chinese wedding banquet: red drapes, Chinese couplets, lanterns and vintage items.
We started with the signature Hakka Yam Abacus, a chewy, delightfully earthy dish that immediately evoked a sense of home-cooked warmth. The Hakka Steamed Chicken was tender, and subtly aromatic, its simplicity highlighted the freshness of the ingredients.
The Steamed Pork Belly with Yam was a standout, meltingly tender with layers of flavour and aromatic that soaked perfectly into the yam slices. The Claypot Eggplant with Minced Pork was richly savory, served bubbling hot and deeply satisfying, while the Stewed Pork Belly with Black Fungus delivered that classic Hakka depth - earthy, slightly sweet and umami- packed.
To round off the meal, their Iced Coffee Special was a delightful surprise—strong, fragrant, and just the right touch of local flair to finish off such a hearty meal.
This is more than just a restaurant—it’s a warm gathering place that brings people together over authentic dishes prepared with heart.
