Birch Memorial Clock Tower is one of the Iconic landmarks in Ipoh. This clock tower is to commemorate the first British resident, James Wheeler Woodford Birch, who was assinated in 1875.
Located in the middle of the elegant square, near Town Hall and State Mosque, this clock tower has a controversial story of violence, revenge, and Malay uprising.
James Wheeler Woodford Birch is Perak's first British resident and was murdered by a local Malay Chief. This created the Perak War, with the British sending troops and taking over the Perak State.
The Birch Memorial Clock Tower officially opened in 1909 to commemorate the death of Mr. Birch. The tower has four corners, each corner representing the four virtues of British Administration; Loyalty, Justice, Patience, and Fortitude.
