Sultanahmet Square, also known as the Hippodrome of Constantinople, is the perfect starting point to explore Istanbul’s old city. Once the grand arena of the Byzantine Empire, today it is surrounded by some of the city’s most iconic landmarks: Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, and the Basilica Cistern. The square itself is home to ancient monuments like the Obelisk of Theodosius, the Serpent Column, and the German Fountain.
I loved walking through the square at sunset, when the call to prayer echoes between the mosques and the atmosphere feels magical. The wide pedestrian area makes it easy to stroll, take photos, and soak up the history. Street vendors selling simit (Turkish bagels) and roasted chestnuts add to the charm.
If you want to feel the soul of Istanbul in one place, Sultanahmet Square is where the city’s history and culture truly come alive.
