Guangdong Pink Flower Sea 🌸: Stepping into a Springtime Dream

Located in Jiangmen, Guangdong, the purple-flowered jacarandas here resemble Japan’s elegant cherry blossom avenues. Unlike the delicate, sorrowful petals of cherry blossoms falling at a rate of 5 cm per second, the jacaranda’s branches are lush with tightly-knit clusters of flowers.

Standing under this sea of pink, I suddenly understood why Shunji Iwai often films young girls running through cherry blossoms. There’s something magical in the fleeting moment of a 17-year-old girl passing beneath the cherry blossoms, with petals falling just as she does. It made me think of the moments from those films, where cherry blossoms witness significant moments — like the sakura snow blowing past a train track in Your Name, or the weeping cherry trees in Our Little Sister, which bloom and fall through the seasons, symbolizing the passage of generations.

It’s like the warmth from Little Forest, where the cherry blossoms gently float into the room, and the character, Ichiko, catches them in the spring evening glow. 🌸
