Jiayuguan is the legendary western terminus of the Great Wall, brimming with dramatic ramparts and panoramic desert scenery. The Overhanging Wall is an absolute must—clinging to steep cliffs with jaw-dropping views, it’s our personal favorite for both history and breathtaking landscapes!

Here’s a smooth sightseeing route if you’re staying close to the scenic area:

1️⃣ Start at Guan City of Jiayuguan (08:30–19:30). Wander the ancient fortress, walk past imposing gates, and snap shots with its unique architecture. Early morning light makes the walls glow for unbeatable photos!
2️⃣ Next, tackle the Overhanging Great Wall Scenic Spot (08:00–20:00). The steep climb is worth it for sweeping desert and mountain vistas; pause halfway up for epic selfies against the rugged backdrop. Take it slow—steps can be uneven!
🌟 Personal tip: Arrive before 10 AM; you’ll beat bus crowds and have the Overhanging Wall nearly to yourself.
3️⃣ Swing by Jiayuguan Guanchengli for old town charm and local eats. Outdoor cultural lanes and sunny plazas offer fun candid shots, especially where ancient bricks meet leafy trees.
4️⃣ Finish at the Jiayuguan Pass section of the Great Wall (09:00–17:00). Marvel at vast landscapes melded with ancient defenses. The best shots are from the southern battlements looking over the desert.
5️⃣ Optional: Jiayuguannanhu Scenic Area—great for a calm evening stroll by the lakeside.
