Compared to the Red Wave Canyon in the U.S., Jingbian Red Wave Valley in Shaanxi, China, offers an equally breathtaking experience. Though lesser-known, it was recognized by National Geographic as a must-visit natural wonder.
Unlike Xi’an during peak holidays, Shaanxi presents raw, majestic beauty with:
• Red Wave Valley – a sandstone masterpiece from the age of dinosaurs, stunning under the sun with no photo editing needed.
• Wuzuo Gorge – the “time canyon,” with twisted rock walls that feel like stepping through a portal.
• Hukou Waterfall – roaring waters from the Yellow River cascading down, occasionally adorned with rainbows.
Best time to visit: March to May, between 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM to catch the sunlight streaming through the canyon.
Suggested 7-day itinerary: Xi’an → Hancheng → Hukou → Kunkun Loan → Yan’an → Wuzuo → Red Wave → Salt Lake → Zhongwei → Yinchuan.
