Fortress of the War God: My Solo Hike to Kasugayama Castle

Rising silently from the forests of Joetsu City, the ruins of Kasugayama Castle are not just another historical site—they are the sprawling, hidden fortress of Uesugi Kenshin, the legendary "Dragon of Echigo" and one of Japan's most revered samurai generals. For a solo traveler, a visit here is a challenging pilgrimage into the heart of Sengoku history and breathtaking natural beauty.

My Solo Itinerary:

· Morning – The Ascent & Strategic Views: Started early from Joetsu, taking a taxi or bus to the base of Mount Kasuga. Began the vigorous hike up the well-marked trails. Reaching the main Honmaru (central bailey) was a physical accomplishment. Standing on the empty summit, surrounded by massive earthen walls and moats, I understood why this was considered an impregnable fortress. The strategic views over the Joetsu Plain and the Sea of Japan are a ruler's reward.
· Afternoon – History & The Uesugi Shrine: Explored the vast network of secondary baileys and terraces that made this one of Japan's largest mountain castles. Descended to visit the serene Uesugi Jinja, a shrine dedicated to Kenshin, nestled at the castle's base. The attached museum houses fascinating artifacts, including armor and personal items.
· Evening – A Warrior's Meal: Returned to Joetsu city and sought out a local izakaya or restaurant to try koshihikari rice (a Niigata specialty) and fresh seafood from the Japan Sea, reflecting on the legacy of the general who was both a fierce warrior and a devout Buddhist.
