There's a place everyone stops by when they arrive in Johor Bahru: Tan Hiok Nee Heritage Walk. This street, the heart of Johor Bahru's Old Town, blends a timeless charm with a modern sensibility.
⸻
🏮 First Impressions of an Old Street
The first thing you see when you start walking down the street are the Chinese-style shophouses, bearing the marks of time. They're worn yet charming, and the colorful murals dotted throughout immediately catch your eye. While not as flashy as Georgetown in Penang, this area has a much more rustic and warm atmosphere.
⸻
🎨 Johor's Story in the Murals
As you can see in the photos, the walls are adorned with paintings of traditional pottery artisans, people drinking coffee, and scenes from an old marketplace. It's not just pretty pictures; they capture the lives and culture of the Johor Bahru people. It's impressive how these paintings aren't just pretty; they capture the essence of Johor Bahru's people and culture. Taking photos in front of the murals made me feel like I'd traveled back in time.
⸻
☕ Cafes and Local Restaurants
The cafes lining the street all had their own distinct character. Entering a cafe renovated from an old shophouse, the high ceilings and wooden window frames still intact made me feel like I was traveling back in time. A cup of "white coffee," recommended by a local, was perfect for soothing my weary body from the hot weather. There were also small eateries selling traditional Chinese snacks and local cuisine, making it a great place to enjoy a light meal.
⸻
🎶 Weekend Liveliness
When I visited, it was a weekday, so it was quiet, but locals told me that weekends feature street performances and flea markets. The addition of musical instruments and street food makes the street even more vibrant. I definitely want to visit on a weekend next time.

Tanhiokni Cultural Street isn't just a tourist attraction; it's a space where Johor Bahru's history and daily life are intertwined. It's not flashy, but that makes it all the more warm and inviting.
