Kagoshima, Japan has tourist attractions that are more spread out than you might think, so renting a car is essential.

There aren't many places to visit in Kagoshima,

but if you rent a car, you can go to nearby Sakurajima (volcanic island),

Ibusuki (hot springs & sand baths), Lake Ikeda, etc., so I recommend renting a car.

If you're going far, you can go all the way to Miyazaki.
You can travel from Kagoshima -> Miyazaki -> Ibusuki
-> Kagoshima.
