Tired of the crowds in cities and tourist spots, I came to a secluded small town tucked away in the western edge of Zhejiang—Kaihua. Here, the landscape is picturesque, the crowds are few, the ancient villages are tranquil, and the forests are lush green. It truly is a rare paradise for escaping the world. Spend your weekend here and give your body and soul a healing two-day trip.
Day 1: Qianjiangyuan National Park - Tantou Village - Jingu Restaurant
Day 2: Gengong Buddha Kingdom - Cultural Living Room
Recommended check-in spots:
1. Gengong Buddha Kingdom
An awe-inspiring world of root carving, with over ten thousand root carving artworks all crafted from ancient tree roots. Visiting here is a double shock of nature and craftsmanship! Besides root carving art, there are plenty of other activities! You can even take a helicopter ride to overlook this fairyland small town hidden in the mountains.
Attractions:
⭐️ Enter from the North Gate: "Tang Dynasty Strange Stories: Westward Journey" National Trend Immersive Theater, Helicopter Experience
⭐️ Huaxia History and Culture Hall: Creation of the World, Jade Emperor
⭐️ Children's Fun Park: Root-carved animals like the twelve zodiac signs and giraffes; fun rock climbing, jungle adventure, spider tower, and other amusement facilities; plus photo spots like the pink castle
2. Qianjiangyuan National Park
Recommended to come here for hiking and creek tracing in summer! This is the source of the Qiantang River, covered by primeval forest with waterfalls and clear pools scattered around. Hiking and breathing in the fresh air will instantly lift your mood!
2.5-hour route: Source Monument - Yuanjing Waterfall - Zen Cottage - Lotus Pond - Rainbow Waterfall - Triple Waterfall - Yuejian Bridge
3. Tantou Village
An original and rustic village with clear mountains and waters where time flows leisurely. The hundred-acre lotus pond is now in full bloom, graceful and varied in shape~
This is also a preservation area of She ethnic culture. Admire the colorful ribbons, costumes, and artifacts in the Tantou Rural Culture Museum. She totems, family traditions, and teachings are everywhere in the village, immersing you in the thousand-year heritage of the She people.
4. Cultural Living Room
Kaihua’s artistic landmark, featuring a museum, library, cultural center, and more. Books, intangible cultural heritage, and art exhibitions intertwine here. Sitting down for a moment brings inner peace.
5. Food
Kaihua cuisine is a taste of the mountains and waters! I went to Jingu Restaurant and recommend the signature roast duck, with thin and crispy skin; the clear water fish, fresh and tender without any fishy smell, with a milky soup color; and Kaihua green snails, which are amazing when paired with perilla leaves—truly love it~
