[Kanagawa Prefecture/Egara Tenjin Shrine] Kamakura's God of Learning

In 1104, the first year of the Choji era, a picture of Tenjin descended along with a thunderstorm.
The villagers were filled with reverence and built a shrine to house the picture, which is said to be the beginning of this story.
Egara Tenjin Shrine was said to protect the shogunate from evil spirits, and the main shrine is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property.

It is said that the enshrined deity, Sugawara no Michizane, had a great love for plum blossoms, and plum blossoms can be found throughout the shrine grounds.
The shrine building is painted vermilion, and its splendor will catch your eye the moment you pass through the shrine gate.

At the back, you will find a rare sight called the Kappa Brush Tomb. If you look closely, you will see an array of kappa drawings by various people. It was fascinating to look at!
It was built in 1971 as a memorial for the paintbrushes favored by Kamakura-based kappa manga artist Shimizu Kon.
