Kamakura | Not Just Stunning During Cherry Blossom Season, Visit Tsurugaoka Hachimangu During the Lotus Blooming Season

Japan is home to three major Hachimangu shrines: Iwashimizu Hachimangu, Usa Hachimangu, and Tsurugaoka Hachimangu. These shrines are dedicated to Hachiman, the god of war, who is actually a combination of Emperor Ojin, Hime-no-Kami, and Empress Jingu. Originating from the Kamakura period, which emphasized the importance of samurai, Tsurugaoka Hachimangu became a significant shrine for praying for martial success and victory.

During cherry blossom season, the approach to the shrine transforms into a romantic pink ocean. However, in summer, the lotus ponds surrounding the shrine bring lush greenery, and the swaying lotus flowers seem to greet visitors coming to pay their respects.

If you visit during summer, you can experience the seasonal "Chinowa" ritual, part of the unique "Oharai" purification ceremony. By walking in a figure-eight pattern through the Chinowa ring, you can cleanse yourself of misfortunes and sins accumulated over the past six months.

Both the main shrine and the lower Wakamiya shrine have been designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. Their architectural style is fascinating, combining elements of Hachiman-zukuri and Nagare-zukuri. If you have the chance to visit, take time to appreciate the ancient architectural aesthetics.
