Kamikochi, often referred to as the Japanese Alps, offers a beauty that cannot be fully captured in photos. Walking through dense forests and alongside crystal-clear streams and lakes with a glassy blue-green hue is an unparalleled experience. The trails are mostly flat, making it an enjoyable and comfortable hike. In July, while the rest of Japan swelters in the summer heat, Kamikochi remains a cool 22°C, with traces of snow still visible on the mountain peaks. Stepping off the bus, you'll immediately feel refreshed—it's the perfect summer getaway.
🏔️ Hiking Route 1 - Full Trail: Approximately 10 kilometers, taking about 4 hours with breaks. The route includes Taisho Pond, Tashiro Pond, Tashiro Bridge, Hotaka Bridge, Kappa Bridge, Myojin Pond, Myojin Bridge, and ends at the Kamikochi Bus Terminal.
🏔️ Hiking Route 2 - Highlights: A shorter 3.5-kilometer trail, ideal for families or beginners. It takes about 2 hours with stops for photos and exploration. This route covers Taisho Pond, Tashiro Pond, Tashiro Bridge, and Kappa Bridge, which is the most scenic and photogenic section. Beginners can take a bus back from Kappa Bridge. For those with more stamina, you can continue to Myojin Pond (an additional 4 kilometers) and then loop back 3.5 kilometers via Myojin Ridge to Kappa Bridge, as described in Route 1.
Tips:
1️⃣ You only need to carry some light snacks and water for the hike. Food and drinks are readily available at Kappa Bridge, making it very convenient.
2️⃣ Most of the trail is shaded by trees and runs alongside the river, keeping it cool. However, a sun hat is still recommended.
3️⃣ After crossing Kappa Bridge, take the left bank nature exploration trail towards Myojin Pond. You'll encounter many monkeys 🐒 enjoying their serene environment.
