If you're tired of Tokyo and Osaka and looking for a place that feels like walking in Switzerland, Kamikochi is the answer! This alpine valley in central Japan offers 100% pure nature.
Kappa Bridge: A Must-Visit Landmark
This iconic light wooden bridge stretches across the crystal-clear turquoise waters of the Azusa River. The stunning backdrop features the snow-capped Mount Hotaka (depending on the season), creating a breathtaking scene. This area serves as the central hub of Kamikochi, with souvenir shops, restaurants, and cafes where you can relax and enjoy a cup of coffee.
Taisho Pond: A Picture-Perfect Spot
The mirror-like waters of Taisho Pond reflect the surrounding mountains and protruding tree stumps, creating an unseen and mesmerizing view. It's recommended to visit this spot first thing in the morning when the light is beautiful, and the pond is calm, ensuring perfect reflections.
Hiking Trails: Relaxed and Perfect for Beginners and Photography Enthusiasts
The trails in Kamikochi are mostly flat and easy to walk, making them accessible even for non-hikers. Wooden and gravel paths are available throughout.
Recommended Day Trip Routes:
- Taisho Pond → Kappa Bridge: Approximately 3.7 km, taking about 1 hour and a bit. A leisurely walk along the river.
- Kappa Bridge → Myojin Pond: Approximately 3.0 km, taking about 1 hour each way. This route offers a more forested atmosphere and leads to Myojin Pond, a small sacred pond.
Cool Weather All Year Round (Perfect for Escaping the Heat!)
Even in summer (July-August), the average temperature remains comfortable at around 20-23°C, making it an ideal escape from the heat of big cities. The autumn foliage season (late September to October) is the highlight of the year, with golden leaves blanketing the valley.
Open Season: Mid-April to Mid-November (closed during heavy snowfall).
Note: Private cars are not allowed. You must park at Sawando and take a bus or take a direct bus from major cities like Matsumoto or Takayama.
Essentials: Comfortable walking shoes, layered clothing (as the weather changes quickly), and energy for walking!
