Kaohsiung Chengcing Lake: The Soulful Lake of Kaohsiung

Chengcing Lake, located in Niaosong District, Kaohsiung City, is the largest lake in the city. Also known as Dapi Lake or Dabe Lake, it serves as a major water source for the region and is a popular tourist attraction. The lake's expansive surface and elephant-shaped outline add to its charm.

With a rich history, Chengcing Lake was originally part of the Tsao Kung Irrigation System, functioning as a reservoir for agricultural irrigation. After World War II, the Republic of China Armed Forces stationed at the Dabe Lake Racecourse Camp. In 1963, during a southern tour, Chiang Kai-shek stayed by the lake and renamed it Chengcing Lake.

Today, Chengcing Lake is regarded as the soul of Kaohsiung and has been twinned with Lake Tazawa in Akita Prefecture, Japan. Visitors can explore Chiang Kai-shek's former residence, the Chengqing Pavilion, located by the lake. Beyond being a water source, Chengcing Lake is a beloved recreational spot for Kaohsiung residents.
