The predecessor of Pier 2 was the warehouse complex of the second docking terminal of Kaohsiung Port. It was built in 1973 and once stored goods such as sugar and fish meal. With the transfer of industries, the warehouses were gradually idle until the National Day fireworks were located here in 2000, which attracted the attention of the art and cultural circles. The Pier 2 Art Development Association was established in 2001. Since 2006, it has been managed by the Cultural Affairs Bureau and officially transformed into a cultural and creative center in southern Taiwan.
🎨 Warehouse aesthetics and creative space
Pier 2 covers three major warehouse complexes, Dayong, Penglai, and Dayi, with a total of more than 25 old warehouses. Among them are the wood forest, doll installations, giant painted walls, elevated rails, etc., which are the favorites of trendy people to take photos and check in.
• Public art installations: giant Transformers, water-spraying flower dogs, chair music scores, etc., have become hot spots for taking photos and checking in.
• Moonlight Theater & Live Warehouse: Independent music performances and theater programs are held regularly on weekends. It has become a focus of cultural and artistic performances since 2010.
• Hamashing Railway Museum: Located in Penglai District, it is a Taiwan Railway History Museum, displaying Asia's largest 1:87 HO rail model.
🚊 Harbor reconstruction: Light rail and Dagang Bridge connect the new look
Pier-2 can be connected to the entire park through the light rail "Pier-2 Penglai Station". The Dagang Bridge, which was opened in 2020, not only connects Penglai and Dayi District, but is also Taiwan's first rotatable pedestrian bridge, becoming a new visual focus.
✨ Markets and festivals
Pier-2 is a major center of cultural and creative activities in Kaohsiung. There are handmade markets and creative markets on weekends, and large-scale theme events such as Dagang Concert, Steel Sculpture Art Festival, and Container Art Festival are regularly held.
