Background
The Kaohsiung Cultural Center (高雄市文化中心), located in Lingya District, Kaohsiung, was established in 1981. Originally built as the Kaohsiung Chiang Kai-shek Cultural Center, its memorial function was removed in 2007 and the name changed to the current one. The building covers about 13,884 m² and includes two main performance halls, multiple galleries, a library, and the office of the city’s Bureau of Cultural Affairs.
Some of the venues inside:
• Jhihde Hall (至德堂) – seats ~1,672 people; main hall used for large performances.
• Jhihshan Hall (至善廳) – ~483 seats; used for smaller performances and events.
• Galleries & Exhibition Spaces including Chih-Chen Hall, Chih-Mei Galleries, meeting & exhibition rooms.
Why It’s Worth Visiting
• It’s not just a building; it’s a cultural pulse. Every weekend, there are performances, art shows, exhibitions, and an art market that bring local artists and communities together.
• The grounds are peaceful and scenic—a large public space to walk, rest, people-watch, enjoy public art installations, and see Kaohsiung from a quieter side.
• It’s accessible. Near Cultural Center MRT Station; easy to combine with nearby city attractions.
My Impression
Visiting the Kaohsiung Cultural Center feels like stepping into the heart of local life and creativity. It has warmth: the laughter and chatter from small performances, the quiet reverence during exhibitions, the way the library corners give space to think. One of my favourite moments was catching a weekend art market by dusk—the way soft light spilled over the plaza, people browsing handcrafted wares, small performances, and the sense that culture here is not just “displayed” but lived. This place gives you both scale (in performance halls, architecture) and intimacy (in gallery corners, the art market).
