Karakol surprised me with its mix of cultures, alpine landscapes, and cozy cafés. It’s a great base for treks into the Terskey Alatau Mountains, or for day trips to Issyk-Kul Lake. I went horse trekking with locals, soaked in hot springs, and sampled Dungan cuisine — spicy, hearty, and so satisfying. The blend of Soviet charm and nomadic culture is super unique.
