Karuizawa: Enjoy a Slow Life in the Greenery of the "Little Switzerland of the East"

Karuizawa, a highland resort just an hour's drive from Tokyo, is known as the "Little Switzerland of the East." On this trip to Karuizawa, we chose a leisurely pace to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty and unique charm of this region.

The Four-Season Beauty of Kumoba Pond

Kumoba Pond was our first stop in Karuizawa. This small lake, nicknamed "Swan Lake" by locals, is renowned for its mirror-like surface. Although we didn't see any swans, the ducks swimming gracefully within and the lush forests surrounding it added a touch of life to the scenery. We strolled along the lakeside trail, the clear water reflecting the surrounding greenery, the gentle breeze rippling the surface, creating a tranquil and beautiful scene. Kumoba Pond showcases its unique charm, whether in the vibrant green of spring or the vibrant red of autumn leaves.

Kyu Karuizawa Ginza-dori: Cultural and Creative Activities and Cuisine

A short walk from Kumoba Pond brings us to Kyu Karuizawa Ginza-dori. This historic street is lined with a variety of cultural and creative shops, unique restaurants, and souvenir shops. Karuizawa's unique jams, honey, and handicrafts are sold here, each filled with unique personality and stories. We strolled the streets, savoring local delicacies and soaking up the rich cultural atmosphere.

Besides shopping, Kyu-Karuizawa Ginza-dori is also a great place for dining. From traditional soba noodles to fragrant coffee, the food here is diverse. We stopped at a popular bakery, where the aroma of freshly baked bread filled the air, making it incredibly tempting.

The coolness and tranquility of Shiraito Falls
Karuizawa's natural beauty goes far beyond this. Shiraito Falls is another breathtaking attraction. Rather than cascading down from a height, the waterfall cascades down a roughly 70-meter-wide rock face, earning its name from its silk-like, thread-like flow. In the summer, the air here is exceptionally fresh and filled with negative ions, making it a perfect escape from the heat. We walked along the trail toward the waterfall, listening to the gurgling water and feeling the cool breeze, completely relaxing our bodies and minds.

The Exquisite and Romantic Hoshino Resorts

The Hoshino Resorts area in Karuizawa exemplifies the perfect fusion of natural and cultural landscapes. Here, we saw the famous "Stone Church" and "Takahara Church," unique buildings imbued with artistic flair. We also strolled through "Elm Street Town," a shopping district surrounded by a forest of spring elms. Wooden decks along the stream are home to unique shops and cafes, offering a leisurely shopping experience amidst nature.

Summary
A trip to Karuizawa is a journey of spiritual sophistication. The natural landscape here, from the breathtaking scenery of Kumoba Pond to the gentle trickle of Shiraito Falls, evokes a sense of the grandeur and tranquility of nature. Kyu Karuizawa Ginza-dori and Hoshino Resorts seamlessly blend the sophistication of human nature with the purity of nature, allowing visitors to savor a leisurely pace while experiencing its unique cultural charm. If you're looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, Karuizawa is a place worth revisiting.
