Ancient documents say that Kashima Shrine was founded in the first year of Emperor Jimmu's reign. Until modern times, only three shrines were called "Shrine" - Ise Shrine, Katori Shrine, and Kashima Shrine - and Kashima Shrine is in a class of its own when it comes to its long history and pedigree.
The grounds, which cover the size of 15 Tokyo Domes, have many attractions, including Mitarai Pond, where purification rituals are performed in the clear spring water, and the deer park.
The Mitarai Pond in the grounds has more than 400,000 liters of spring water per day, and is so clear that you can see the bottom of the pond.
Access
10 minutes on foot from JR Kashima Line "Kashima Jingu Station"
