[Georgia] The Church Closest to Heaven: "Trinity Church"

Kazbegi, located in northern Georgia near the border with Russia.

The most famous church in Kazbegi, known as the "church closest to heaven" in Georgia, is the Gergeti Trinity Church.

Surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Caucasus, it stands atop a mountain at an altitude of 2,170 meters.

The church itself is said to have been built by an unknown architect around the 14th century.
As of April 2025, it was partially under restoration.

It is also famous for its approximately 1.5-2 hour trek from the base of the mountain, but a paved road has been completed, making it accessible by car (though some parts are still unpaved).

Even in late April, snowfall can occur on some days, and depending on the snowfall, the road may be closed (in which case, the only option is to trek on foot).

Even at this high altitude, there were three stray dogs.
