The Yuhuatai Scenic Area is located 1 km outside of Zhonghuamen in Nanjing. It consists of six functional areas: scenic spots and historical sites area, martyrs' cemetery area, Yuhua stone cultural area, Yuhua tea cultural area, recreational activity area and ecological dense forest area.
Yuhuatai was called Shizigang, Manaogang and Jubaoshan during the Eastern Wu period of the Three Kingdoms period. During the Southern Dynasties, Buddhism was prevalent. Legend has it that the eminent monk Master Yunguang set up an altar here to preach. His piety moved the heavens and petals fell like rain, hence the name Yuhuatai.
The green coverage rate of Yuhuatai is over 90%, and lush trees and colorful flowers can be seen everywhere. Rhododendrons are the characteristic ornamental plants of the scenic area, and grand azalea exhibitions are held regularly every year.
