Wakamatsu, Fukuoka. The Coal Hall, a building dating back to the days when coal trade was booming in Wakamatsu, Kitakyushu.

The Coal Hall is the oldest remaining Western-style building in Wakamatsu Ward, Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture.

There's a sign inside the building that reads "Authorized Persons Only."

However, the first floor is home to Mikazukiya Wakamatsu, a popular Fukuoka croissant shop,
so you can still feel the atmosphere of an old Western-style building near the entrance!

It was apparently built in 1905 (Meiji 38).

You can sense its history as an important facility for the Coal Wholesalers Association, an organization that unified this area, which once thrived on coal-related businesses and trade.

The Coal Hall is registered as cultural property No. 19 in the Kanmon "Nostalgic" Straits: A Station of Time, Memories of Modernization.
