Kitakyushu City has been a sister city with Tacoma, Washington State, USA, since 1959!
This street, decorated with Tacoma's city emblem and totem pole, is named "Tacoma Street."
Near National Route 199 are the new and main buildings of AIM (West Japan General Exhibition Center), the Kitakyushu International Conference Center, and Mikuni World Stadium, and Tacoma Street connects large event facilities, conference centers, and ferry terminals, including the ferry terminal connecting Kitakyushu with Matsuyama in Shikoku.
The explanatory sign is in a somewhat inconspicuous place, so it's unclear how well-known the name "Tacoma Street" is, but it is an important street that serves as one of Kitakyushu's nicknames.
