🌏Kyushu, Japan🌐Surrounding the Kanmon Strait • Exploring the Strait Japanese New Architectural Technology

#August2024

Kanmon Bridge (also known as Shimonoseki Bridge) is a famous suspension bridge located between Shimonoseki and Mojiko Port. It is specially introduced because this bridge looks no different from other bridges connecting two places, but in fact it uses special technology to build an underwater tunnel that allows pedestrians and bicycles to access each other.

This time I walked along the Kanmon Strait from Shimonoseki Karato Market. The scenery along the way was breathtaking, until I walked under the bridge, the magnificent bridge building came into view; to pass through the undersea tunnel on both sides of the strait, I had to keep walking until I saw the signs on the left to take the elevator down to the tunnel; the tunnel is 780 meters long and divides Yamaguchi Prefecture and Fukuoka Prefecture in the middle, attracting tourists to stand on the dividing line to take photos and check in; and the air in the tunnel is well ventilated, so you won't feel uncomfortable walking deep under the sea.

Next time you come to Shimonoseki or Mojiko in Kyushu, you may want to arrange to walk or ride a bicycle across the Kanmon Bridge to see this magnificent construction.
