Kitami City Designated Cultural Property: Kitami Pearson Memorial Hall

📍Location: Kitami City, Hokkaido
🕰️ Year Built: Taisho 3 (1914)

This Western-style building, over a century old, was originally the residence of American missionaries, the Pearson couple. It was designed by the renowned architect W. M. Vories, who created numerous Western-style buildings across Japan. The structure combines the warmth of wooden construction with soft green window frames, making it one of the representative modern architectural landmarks in Kitami.

From the late Meiji period to the early Showa period, Reverend Pearson and his wife engaged in missionary work, charity, and educational activities here, significantly contributing to the cultural and welfare development of the local community. After their return to the United States in 1928, this residence became an important symbol commemorating their legacy and was designated as a cultural property of Kitami City in Heisei 8 (1996).
