If you’re craving a slower kind of day—one with history, sea breezes, and quiet scenic views—Kōchi City is the perfect place to explore on foot. This coastal gem in southern Japan is full of local character, wide-open views, and a strong sense of tradition.
I started at Kōchi Castle, one of the few original castles still standing in Japan. The climb up was worth it, especially the view from behind the statue of Taisuke Itagaki, framed perfectly with the castle rising in the background.
Later, I headed down to Katsurahama, a peaceful stretch of beach facing the vast Tosa Bay. From the Ryuo Cape Observation Deck, the view of the ocean is absolutely breathtaking—just sky, water, and horizon.
Before leaving, I stopped by Watatsumi Shrine (also known as the god of the sea). Tucked near the shoreline, it feels like a quiet prayer carved into the coast.
Why I recommend Kōchi:
・You’ll find peaceful seaside views and historical landmarks in one walkable day
・It’s rich in local pride, beauty, and calm—not too busy, not too far
