A castle from the Azuchi-Momoyama period to the Edo period located in Kumamoto, Kumamoto Prefecture
Also known as "Ginkgo Castle"
A famous castle built by Kato Kiyomasa over a period of seven years from 1601
At the time, it was a huge fortress designed for actual battle, with large and small castle towers, 49 turrets, 18 turret gates, and 29 other castle gates
A particular highlight is the stone wall, also known as "Musha-gaeshi" (a guardian deity of war).
Its curved shape symbolizes the robustness of medieval fortresses
After the Kato clan was abolished, it was the castle of the Hosokawa clan of the Kumamoto domain until the end of the Edo period
