Kumamoto-Suizenji Jojuen Garden: Elegant and tranquil Japanese garden

#7月好去地方2025

Suizenji Jojuen Garden is one of the most famous Japanese gardens in Kumamoto. It is located in the central district of Kumamoto City. It started from the tea house built by Hosokawa Tadatoshi in the early Edo period. After renovation, it has developed into the current strolling garden. The entire garden is designed based on the concept of "Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido", symbolizing the journey from Edo to Kyoto. There are small bridges, flowing water, rockery ponds, pavilions and teahouses in the garden, creating a picturesque scenery.

The main landscapes in the garden include the green hills symbolizing Mount Fuji, the clear large pond, the floating island and the red bridge. The cherry blossoms bloom in spring and the maple leaves turn red in autumn. It is very suitable for strolling and enjoying the changes of the four seasons. You can also experience matcha in the "Between the Ancient and Modern Teachings" in the garden and quietly feel the Japanese style of the Japanese garden.

The Suizenji Jojuen Garden also includes the Izumi Shrine, which enshrines the famous Kumamoto general Kato Kiyomasa and the successive feudal lords of the Hosokawa family. Many candidates and local residents come to pray for good luck and peace. Although the overall park is not large, there are historical and cultural details everywhere, which is deeply loved by tourists at home and abroad.
