If you want to see something special around the Lunar New Year in Kunming, I recommend experiencing the Daguan Park Lantern Festival.
The admission fee is around 100 yuan, which is a bit expensive, but it is worth seeing the large-scale lantern sculptures unique to China and the many people making New Year's wishes.
In my case, I went up to Xishan during the day, took my time looking around, and then came down around sunset and took a taxi to Daguan Park to continue my night trip.
It is not too far from Xishan, so you can easily complete the trip, and the various unique lantern sculptures will make your eyes dazzle..^^
