Longmen / Dragon Gate in the Western Hills District
Cableway
A cableway is available from No. 16 Hubin Road (near Longwang Temple) across Dianchi Lake to the Western Hills / Dragon Gate District. The entire journey offers lake and mountain views, making it a convenient and less strenuous hike.
By Bus / Public Transportation
There are several bus lines, including No. 6, 51, and 94, to Gaoyao. From there, take a local bus or sightseeing bus up the mountain. Alternatively, you can take the Metro and continue on foot (Metro Line 3 → get off at Xishan Station and walk).
Walking / Cliff Path
The Dragon Gate section requires a narrow plank road carved into the cliff face, which can be narrow and steep at points. Be careful.
Recommended route:
The route starts at Sanqing Pavilion → follow the path around the cliff → pass through a cave/rock tunnel → reach Dragon Gate → then continue to Datian Pavilion or various viewpoints.
General opening hours: 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM (sometimes extended hours)
• Dragon Gate (cave/goroto) entrance fee is approximately RMB 30–40
• Some paths are very narrow — if you go during peak hours, you may have to wait or be crowded.
• Comfortable, slip-resistant shoes are recommended, as some areas are rocky and prone to falling.
• Start early to avoid crowds and for the best sunlight/views.
• Bring water, snacks, and photography equipment — some areas have no shops along the way.
• Check the weather conditions — if there's fog, the lake view may not be clear. #travelchina #longmen
