Kunming Dianchi Red-billed Gull Check-in Guide: A Must-Visit for Families with Kids

Visiting Kunming must include the romantic rendezvous with Dianchi Lake and the red-billed gulls! These little travelers from afar truly healed me, and every snap feels like an oil painting 🖼️

💫 Recommended Route:
Start at Haigeng East Pier. I personally checked, and you can see the red-billed gulls as early as the morning of National Day this year. This is the best spot to watch the gulls. Remember to bring some bread to feed them; watching them circle above your head is just adorable~

For lunch, find a restaurant near the dam. I recommend trying Yunnan’s specialty steam pot chicken or crossing-the-bridge rice noodles.

In the afternoon, be sure to experience the Kunming Tourism Cableway (No. 16 Dianchi Road, ticket 59 RMB). The red cable car slowly glides over the lake, offering a full view of Dianchi Lake and the distant city skyline. The view is fantastic! It’s best to go on a sunny day for better photo effects.

In the evening, take a walk by Dianchi Lake (No. 1318 Xishan District). The sunset over Dianchi is as beautiful as a painting. Many locals also come here to dance in the square, giving it a lively atmosphere.

1⃣️ The best time to see the red-billed gulls is from November to March of the following year. Remember to go in the morning when the birds are more active.
2⃣️ Choose good weather for the cableway ride; rainy or cloudy days will affect the experience.
3⃣️ It can be windy by Dianchi Lake, so bring a light jacket.
4⃣️ There are many snack stalls near the scenic area. Try the grilled rice cakes and papaya water.
