The Stone Forest, or Shilin, near Kunming in China’s Yunnan Province, is a breathtaking natural wonder known as the “First Wonder of the World.” Formed over 270 million years ago, this vast area of towering limestone pillars looks like a forest made of stone. Wind and water erosion shaped the rocks into sharp peaks, tall spires, and hidden caves, creating a maze of dramatic formations. Some stones resemble animals, people, or mythical figures, inspiring countless local legends, especially from the Yi ethnic group, who see the forest as a sacred place. Walking through Shilin feels like stepping into a fantasy landscape, where narrow paths twist between grey cliffs and tranquil ponds reflect the stones above. The area changes mood with the light—soft and mysterious at dawn, powerful under the sun. The Stone Forest is a stunning example of nature’s art and a proud symbol of Yunnan’s natural beauty and culture.
