The Stone Forest, or Shilin, near Kunming in China’s Yunnan Province, is a breathtaking natural wonder known as the “First Wonder of the World.” Formed over 270 million years ago, this vast area of towering limestone pillars looks like a forest made of stone. Wind and water erosion shaped the rocks into sharp peaks, tall spires, and hidden caves, creating a maze of dramatic formations. Some stones resemble animals, people, or mythical figures, inspiring countless local legends, especially from the Yi ethnic group, who see the forest as a sacred place. Walking through Shilin feels like stepping into a fantasy landscape, where narrow paths twist between grey cliffs and tranquil ponds reflect the stones above.
