Located in Higashiyama District, Kyoto City, Sanjusangendo is commonly known as Sanjusangendo because there are 33 pillars in the main hall.
There are 1001 statues of the Thousand-Armed Guanyin and other Buddhas enshrined in the main hall. Thousands of Buddha statues with different expressions are neatly arranged on both sides, which is very spectacular. The seated statue of Thousand-Armed Guanyin is magnificent and its intricately carved facial features are truly amazing. The main hall itself and the Buddha statues inside are important national treasures.
The pond garden on the east side of the main hall is an elegant place where trees, rocks and Sanjusangendo Hall are cleverly integrated.
After touring the interior, stroll along the garden and admire the exterior structure of Sanjusangendo again, feeling its simple beauty.
