Upon entering the "Karamon Gate," you'll be greeted by the magnificent Ninomaru Palace. While photography is prohibited inside, the intricate wall paintings and architectural details leave a lasting impression. Each room is clearly explained, from its function to the themes of the wall paintings, making you feel as if you've been transported back to the era of samurai and shoguns.
The garden's trees and flowers are meticulously pruned, with some trees resembling large bonsai, showcasing the dedication to Japanese landscaping art.
For history enthusiasts, Nijo Castle is a must-visit pilgrimage site. As the residence of the Ashikaga shoguns and a venue for hosting important retainers, it also witnessed the historic moment of the return of political power to the Emperor. Walking on the "nightingale floors" that chirp with every step, you can almost imagine the footsteps of the shoguns of the past, evoking a sense of time travel.
After the tour, we visited the garden teahouse to enjoy traditional Japanese sweets and matcha. While savoring the serene beauty of the garden, we felt a sense of peace and leisure.
Whether you're a fan of Sengoku history or simply appreciate the aesthetics of Japanese gardens, Nijo Castle is a must-add to your Kyoto itinerary!
