Visiting Kiyomizu-dera in late November was a deliberate choice, as I wanted to witness the vibrant red leaves blanketing the hillside. After seeing stunning images online, I felt compelled to experience it in person.
🍁 The Atmosphere on the Day
– Starting from Sannen-zaka Street, I walked up amidst the lively chatter of visitors, though it wasn’t overly crowded.
– Upon reaching the wooden balcony of the main hall (Kiyomizu-no-Butai), my first reaction was “Wow!” The hillside was ablaze with fiery red and orange leaves, contrasting beautifully with the green patches. From there, I could see Kyoto city stretching out in the distance.
– Walking to Koyasu Pagoda and looking back at the wooden structure of the main hall, I was captivated by the soft evening light reflecting off the wooden walls, framed by the vibrant red leaves.
⏰ Timing of My Visit
– I visited in mid-November when the autumn foliage was about 80% in full bloom.
– Arriving early at 9 AM allowed me to take photos comfortably before the crowds arrived. The staff opened the gates promptly, letting me enjoy a peaceful stroll.

✅ Highlights
1. The main wooden balcony was breathtaking—photos simply cannot capture its grandeur.
2. Walking deeper into the paths under the foliage led me to the striking Sanjū-no-tō (Three-story Pagoda) surrounded by crimson maple trees—a photo spot I absolutely loved.
3. Otowa Waterfall below had leaves floating serenely, offering a tranquil contrast to the bustling main areas.
