Four Seasons at Kiyomizu-dera: The Beauty and Rituals of Kyoto's Iconic Temple

Kiyomizu-dera in Kyoto, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the city's most iconic temples, renowned for its "Kiyomizu Stage." From Kyoto Station, you can take city bus No. 100 or 206 and get off at the "Gojo-zaka" stop, followed by a 10-minute uphill walk to reach the bustling entrance path. However, the uphill climb can be quite tiring, so families traveling with elderly members or children might consider taking a taxi instead.

Upon entering the temple grounds, the grand "Niomon Gate" and the "Three-storied Pagoda" are the first to greet visitors. Following the designated path up the stone steps, you'll arrive at the ticket booth. The temple tickets feature seasonal designs and themes, making them both a memorable keepsake and a collectible item.

Soon after, you'll reach the "Kiyomizu Stage," a masterpiece of traditional Japanese wooden architecture. Each season offers its own charm: cherry blossoms in spring, cicadas in summer, autumn foliage, and snow in winter, all of which leave visitors in awe.

Continuing further inside, you'll pass by the souvenir and stamp (goshuin) counters, where various charms for safety, love, and academic success are sold. Visitors can also collect the temple's unique goshuin stamp as a memento.

The final stop is the "Otowa Waterfall," the origin of the temple's name. Visitors can line up to use long-handled ladles to collect water from three streams, symbolizing longevity, academic success, and love. However, tradition suggests choosing only one to demonstrate focus and sincerity. After washing your hands, silently make a wish to show respect and earnestness.

Kiyomizu-dera is not only a famous tourist destination in Kyoto but also a place rich in Japanese faith and cultural traditions. The surrounding areas, including the Ninen-zaka and Sannen-zaka shopping streets, are also must-visit spots for travelers exploring Kyoto.
