Located in the quiet village of Kibune, just north of Kyoto, Kifune Shrine is a beautiful Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of water. Surrounded by forested hills and flowing rivers, it’s known for its iconic red lantern-lined steps and the peaceful path that connects its three shrine areas.

Expect to spend around ¥700–¥900 per person for transportation, including the train ride and short bus from Kibuneguchi Station. Entrance to the shrine is free, but you might want to try the water fortune reading for a small fee.

Travel tip: Arrive early in the morning to enjoy the calm atmosphere and soft lighting. Wear comfortable shoes for walking and bring a jacket—Kibune tends to be cooler than central Kyoto.
